IN CHARACTER
Name: Beverly Marsh
Canon: IT (2017 film)
Canon Point: Post Film, shortly after she arrives at her aunt’s.
Age: 13

History: I’m Not Afraid Of You

Personality: The first thing people would tell you about Beverly Marsh is that she’s pretty. She’s slender, with bright red curly hair, and clear blue eyes. She has a smattering of freckles across her pale skin, and it’s clear she’s blossoming into a beautiful young woman. But Beverly is far more than her looks, though, despite being so often reduced to them.

Beverly is one of those young girls who hit puberty early, something that has not escaped the eyes of her classmates. The girls tease her, calling her a slut, and the boys talk about all the things she’s done to them- even older students like Henry Bowers know about Bev’s alleged reputation. Word gets around so much so that even the adults in Derry have begun to pick up on what they say about the Marsh Girl. Beverly has also caught the eye of her father, a violent, abusive man, who longs to keep Beverly as his little girl, and his claim over her.

Due to her father’s growing abuse, Beverly has a hard time trusting adults. The person she should adore the most is the one who hurts her the most, and she knows that no one would ever believe her if she chose to speak up about her father’s abuse. Her mother, who is often a silent witness, was just as much a victim as she was, and fell even further under her father’s thumb. Facing isolation and bullying at school, and a toxic home environment, and the willing ignorance of the adults around her, Beverly isn’t about to jump when any adult says jump.

That being said, of all of the Losers, Beverly is easily the best with adults. She’s spent years trying to tiptoe around her father, and subsequently is particularly good at charming older men- this can be seen when she distracted the local pharmacist so that her friends could steal medical supplies.

Beverly is a kind young woman- she looks out for those around her, even without knowing them. She reached out to new kid Ben Hanscomb, helping him evade the Bowers gang, even going so far as to be the only person to sign his yearbook. The few friends she’s made in the Loser’s Club mean the world to her, and she would without a doubt do anything for them all. They all risked their lives to save her, and she would do it for them in a heartbeat.

Beverly is easily one of the bravest of the Losers. When Bill asks them to enter the house on Neibolt Street, Beverly is the only person not to want to wait outside. She was able to survive being kidnapped by IT due to her lack of fear- something she overcomes when after her father attempts to rape her, she manages to subdue him. She is only abducted because she is taken by surprise.

Ironically, it is her own burgeoning sexuality that is her greatest fear. She knows what people think when they look at her, but knowing that, she’s able to weaponize it against older men, aware that because she is a child they cannot touch her. The greatest fear lies in her own changing body, however, and what this means. As a child, she’s safe, no one will touch her. But when she’s a woman, her father sees her as open game. This is portrayed physically when Beverly’s bathroom is covered in blood and her own hair tries to kill her- the menstruation metaphor is apparent.

As a friend, Beverly is easy-going. She’s got a good sense of humor that allows her to take teasing from Richie, and uses her flirtatious attitude to keep things light when necessary in a way that the others can’t quite manage. She is also one of the most perceptive Losers- when It is forcing them all apart she’s the one to call it out. It’s also her abduction that brings the Losers together once more.

Often reduced to the role of the token girl, the town bicycle, or just eye candy, Bev is a complex young woman coming of age in the late 1980s. She likes boy bands, rock music, and her friends. She isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, or of anything else. She and her friends made a vow, to return to Derry if IT ever returns, and she plans to do so. For as long as she can remember, anyway.

SAMPLES
Network Sample: [The camera opens on the door of the Loser’s Club Unit. Particularly on the name Bev Marsh. Slowly, the camera pans over to reveal a thirteen-year-old girl with short, curly red hair. Her blue eyes are bright and she smiles and waves.]

I heard when my friends arrived, Eddie gave them all an introduction video. [She had to do her own, it wasn’t fair to ask Eddie to make her a video right now- he was still probably furious.] I’m Beverly, and I’m a Loser. [And she’s proud of it, no matter what anyone says. They were just jealous they didn’t have her friends.]

Prose/Action Sample:
Beverly found herself thinking about Ben, when she came into the library. He seemed blurry at the edges now, when she looked back on it. But she remembered him, remembered his poem and his fondness for the stacks of books. Ben, who had kissed her and brought her back to them. He'd been an anchor, when she'd begun to float.

Even that was fuzzy now, and Bev shivers at the memory of It. It was better to think about happier times- or, better yet, distract herself by exploring. It was refreshing, not having to be anywhere at any time, no need to sneak around her father anymore. Thusly, she'd been exploring, trying to memorize the layout of the station. It was easier on her bike, thankful that had been pulled through, too.

She walks her bike around the library, careless in that she probably should have left it outside. But this place was so huge- she didn't want to leave it unattended for even a minute. She’s not sure anyone would want to steal it- it’s a piece of junk- but she knew her friends were mad at her, and she didn’t put it past them to do something so petty like let the air out of her tires. Maybe she deserved it, too, if what Eddie saw was true. If she did opt to leave his body in the sewer. If she and Ben both did.

No, that wasn’t her. That had to be some alternative future, or something else. Something made up. She knew better than to trust her own eyes, when dealing with something that could only be described as supernatural. And sorry but a spaceship that abducted her totally fit under supernatural.
